Unfortunately I was a little late to capture the normal appearance of the legendary Wrigley Field. Everything was stripped to the core because of massive ongoing renovations. The famous red marquee was nowhere to be seen. But walking around the field was a nice thing to do anyway, as the whole neighborhood reflects a certain Chicago aura, placed in a residential setting. Although in a part of town called Lakeview, there is an unofficial description, naming the blocks around the field Wrigleyville. Wrigley Field is home to the Chicago Cubs, one of two local baseball teams. The Cubs haven´t won a title since 1908, some say there is a curse on the field and the only way for the Cubs to ever turn the tide is by tearing down the whole place (see also Rich Cohens article in the Wall Street Journal). But who wants the Cubs to win? The games at Wrigley Field are more than just a sports event. It´s always also a family thing, a cultural event, and not winning a series for more than a hundred years is a guarantor for legend building and cementing the iconic reputation. People come here for the happening and the fun. I can´t really think of any team in Europe, in any sports category, that not only could survive such a long dry-spell, but could still prosper and have such a huge fan base.
The low north side of the stadium reveals a view onto the grandstand.
This shot nicely shows the stands on the rooftops of the adjacent buildings.
The other side of the scoreboard which is still turned
manually, another sympathetic feature of
Wrigley Field.
The name derives from the chewing gum company, Mr. Wrigley became the teams owner in 1921.
