Stilt Houses In Northern Germany

Germany´s west coast is part of one of the largest cross-border National Parks in Europe, the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site. It stretches from southern Denmark, all along Germany´s west coast and into the northeastern part of The Netherlands. The Wadden sea is part of the North Sea, a relatively shallow yet rough and dangerous body of water with frequent storms and a generally moody spirit. Storm floods and surges have altered the coast line considerably in the past centuries and left a strong mark in the DNA of its inhabitants mentality. Loss of land and lives were considerable in the course of time, eventually people found a way to live with the marine peril. One of the characteristic results are the stilt houses.

Weather is a relative matter along the North Sea coast.

Sunny skies, hurricane force winds and hail can all

happen within hours - especially in winter months.

Even the public loo is up and above

Stilt houses aren´t widely spread, most of them tend to

be in touristic areas and none of them are inhabited.

Many are restaurants and cafés, public toilets

or offices of local nature preservation groups.
