RANDOM NORTH FRISIA

First of all I need to explain myself a little: yes, I presently live in Vienna. Yes, I´m posting quite a bit about northern Germany and not from Austria; the reason being my rehab at a seaside health resort for a slipped disc and long Covid. So inbetween practicing, exercising, working out and eating, I hike and drive around a bit to get to know the area a little better.

In today´s post I present some random impressions from roaming around. Quite often I´m fascinated by the not so pretty things in public spaces, just as I also spot the standard neatness of things, objects, scenes and buildings that comply with the general perception of "nice".  So it´s a little mix of both.

A small shipyard for trawlers and the not so Abramovichesque yachts.

Mitbringsel = the little something you bring along for your host, or

as in this case, just a souvenir (if the shop would be in business).

Historic harbor of Büsum, shrimp capital of Germany.

Considering the many storm floods which have cost so many lives

and destroyed so many towns over the centuries, I´m always im-

pressed by the numerous old buildings that are still around.

A very interesting variant of how a dike may look. In most cases they´re gras

with a modest cycling/pedestrian path, here it´s the whole asphalt shebang.

Interesting light pole along a boardwalk through the salt marshes.

The end of the doggie zone has to be somewhere,

good thing someone made a decision.

Post WW II architecture in Germany is a touchy subject. It was

particularly reckless in the 70s and 80s - this is after all a

first row seaside location.

Friedrichstadt on the other hand, is an interesting small town whose architecture is predominantly Dutch. The town was founded by Duke Frederick III. of Gottorf, who aimed for a major trading-post by establishing Dutch Remonstrants for the job, granting them religious freedom.

A playground in front of an industrial looking barn in a rural area.

A buoy from ca. 1910 decorating a green space.

During my rehab I always pass by this spot on my nordic walking route

and always wonder who lives in the apartment building.
