January Walk Through Salt Marshes

The salt marshes are another typical feature of Northern Germany´s west coast, ever present where you´ll encounter the Wadden Sea. A natural and a man made form of land reclamation, they are a welcome development for various sustainable and climate change related reasons. But foremost they´re a paradise for many birds of passage that use the marshes as breeding ground.

This is not a salt marsh but the hinterland of

the dike that can be seen in the background.

Once the dike is crossed the salt marshes begin.

For their and the birds´protection people may

only walk on these constructed pathways.

The Westerhever lighthouse is a popular site with tourists,

especially in the warmer season. It´s also a sought-after

location for weddings.
