The third Sylt blogpost within a few days. The first one of a walk in Braderuper Heide, towards the north of the island, the second one of Westerland, the "capital" of Sylt right in the middle, and now the deep south. Hörnum is the southernmost place of Sylt, here the calm waters of the North German Mudflats meet the rough waves of the North Sea. Looking in a southerly direction one can see the sister islands Amrum and Föhr. The nice thing about Sylt is its size. Want to go north or to the eastern heathers? To the southern tip or the western beaches? They´re all within a short drive from each other, and in the off-season one sometimes even gets the feeling of solitude. Ok, maybe that´s a bit over the top, but at least there aren´t masses of people around.

The mythical sand crocodile and some cultural remains of the wild

and seldom seen Island Natives can be seen here and there.

The famous stair to nowhere is one of the last great secrets of the island.

Unimpressed by scary mysteries, some folks have settled in the valley...

...and on top of the hill.

Environmental protection without...

...and prevention of letting the public enter though the gate

to the devouring moorlands with barbed wire.

Lighthouse and beach round off the pretty image of a tight-knitted community by the sea.
