In the middle of the night Queen Mary 2 left the North Sea and passed into the mouth of the Elbe River, a couple of hours later we started arriving in Hamburg. It was shortly after six o´clock, the sun was rising and it promised to be a glorious day. The observation deck was filling with people wanting to witness this special moment - the slow crawl towards the terminal, famous landmarks coming into sight and the coming-to-life process of the vast port infrastructure. We were approaching the Elbphilharmonie, still unfinished and under construction at the time, and everyone was gazing at the grand view that was unfolding. I had been on deck early that morning before the crowd came. First I stood in the middle, but as it filled up around me I moved to the starboard side. It was from here that I had this view and was able to capture that special moment.
