When the Bauhaus School moved from Weimar to Dessau, everybody involved had to move as well. Walter Gropius was convinced that Dessau was the best option (the others were Frankfurt/Main and Mannheim), because the offer by then Mayor Fritz Hesse was the most convincing. Amongst other things the Bauhaus lecturers (masters) were to have their own generous homes, all according to Gropius´ vision, close to the school. The houses included studios with large windows, which was especially important for the painters amongst the masters. Builder-owner of the houses was the City of Dessau, everyone living in them paid rent.

Three of the Meisterhäuser were semi-detached houses that were

occupied by two families, in this case by Kandinsky/Klee.
