The spectacular Bandiagara Cliffs of Mali are a highlight in a country that has quite a few highlights for the individual traveler. The cliffs have attracted many free climbers and even more hikers. A runway in the middle of nowhere allowed for big airliners coming directly from Paris to land here, French tourists have been the biggest group of visitors arriving here in large numbers. Since jihadists have terrorized the region, tourism has come to a standstill. Locals faced with economic hardship and great insecurities try to get away to safer regions or countries, sometimes laying their savings and lives into the hands of ruthless traffickers.

Free climbing paradise. Villagers tolerated free climbers with mixed feelings, as they often

climbed without respect and knowledge of local traditions and beliefs. Most caves are

sacred ground and off limits for strangers, access only allowed by invitation.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The patterns and natural dyeing techniques are widespread in Western Africa

and can also be found on woven material.

 

 

 

 

Animistic beliefs are still a part of Dogon culture, many ceremonial acts
