Focus Canada: Titanic Graves in Halifax

After the Titanic sank, numerous bodies were collected out of the icy waters. Most were buried in three Halifax cemeteries, 121 victims are interred at the Fairview Lawn Cemetery, nineteen at the Roman Catholic Mount Olivet Cemetery and ten at the Jewish Baron de Hirsch Cemetery.

While on a vacation trip to Nova Scotia, we made a day trip from the Liverpool region up to Halifax, a roughly four hour round trip. Even though Halifax doesn´t have too many obvious highlights, it is a very pleasant city with a positive flair. There are several Universities and Colleges which make Halifax a young and vibrant town with it´s very own subculture. On a day trip there are only certain items one can scratch off the agenda, one of them is definitely the Fairview Cemetery.

After having seen at least three different movie versions and seen and read half a dozen documentaries about the Titanic, it certainly is haunting to see actual graves of people who have endured this epic catastrophe to a certain point. At least these unfortunates were in hallowed ground, wheras the majority of the others sank into a dark forlorn abyss. Perhaps either place is a good place for dead bodies, as long as the souls find their way.

This child is not so unknown anymore: Here lies the body of

nineteen month old Sidney Leslie Goodwin.

Forensic testing identified the boy in 2007.

Another interesting discovery was this grave with old
