Close to Home: A Walk Through Washington

One of my favorite pastimes is to simply walk trough Washington. It´s almost always rewarding, getting to know new neighbourhoods, new perspectives and new insights into the oldest new city. A new city is one that has specifically been planned and built just for one sole purpose, namely being the new capital of a country. Washington D.C. and Brasilia are two wonderful examples. Brasilia is a new new city, Washington is an old new city. And even though it´s old, the US capital is constantly changing and evolving, staying young in spirit. Unlike many European cities, this town has never been destroyed in it´s 200+ years, what one sees is the result of a dynamic urban evolution. No matter where you step you´re bound to discover bold visions, new hipness and always the question to yourself: Wait a minute, was that there before? So don´t hesitate, go out and discover the many aspects of D.C.

A walk trough downtown around 7th St:

The Archives as seen from the US Navy Memorial.

New rising over the old, preservation instead of destruction.

Chinatown Express, my favorite chinese restaurant

in the greater DC area.

E Street Chinatown. Hard to imagine that this used to be the heart of the german quarter

more than a century ago.

The wonderful Southern Building is a chicago school-style building

built in 1910/11.

The narrowest walkable alley I´ve come across in downtown,

hardly three feet wide.

6th Street heading towards National Gallery of Art. Newseum on the left.

New Hope used to be a huge synagogue in the past.

More to follow.
