Why do a blogpost about the Air Force Memorial? There are many other memorials dedicated to the different branches of the military and to the many wars the US has fought, and one can argue about the aesthetics of all of them, but the Air Force Memorial has a certain connection to Berlin. The United States Air Force kept West Berlin alive during the Soviet Blockade of the city. It was the Berlin Airlift that kept things going and moving. Who doesn´t know the famous picture of Berliners, mostly kids, standing on a hill of bomb raid rubble, watching in awe as a DC-4 is about to land at the Tempelhof Airfield? I went to the Memorial to take some pictures, but also to pay my respects to the candy bombers (Rosinenbomber) who were the heroes of many Berlin kids who caught the little bags floating down on little kerchief-parachutes. The candy drops were an idea of American pilot Gail Halvorsen who started throwing the little bags out of the cockpit window shortly before the plane touched down on the airfield. Many other pilots followed suit. There is also a Memorial in Berlin honoring the American action.
