The anonymous mass commute ugliness of the American Legion Bridge is one reason we don´t take that route when going to Leesburg. A much more serene and prettier version of a laid back weekend outing by car goes via Poolesville and White´s Ferry. When living in Maryland there can not be many reasons for going to Leesburg: The Outlet Mall and the Döner Guy - and White´s Ferry. We´ve been taking the ferry so often in the past four years, that we earned the golden ferry pass with pin button for lifelong free rides. Well, maybe not quite, but everytime we come down White´s Ferry Road from Poolesville, it´s a little like arriving at a familiar spot with friends and neighbours gathering for a social get-together. Of course the get-together always happens on the ferry itself and lasts only for roughly five minutes. Time enough to snap a few photos and hand the wild backcountry man, i.e. the licensed (or not) ferry captain the cash.
