Close to Home: Coral Pink Sand Dunes

When travelling out west, one tends to go to places that are in the mainstream pantheon of natural wonders. The good thing about them is that they have been confirmed and reconfirmed as spectacular over and over again. Millions of images confirm this yet again. So it is good I suppose, and we went there as well. After all, most of us have herd instincts and out there we are on the range. Now, what about the many not so awe-inspiring places? The smaller natural wonders, the ones which, would they be placed somerwhere else, say, somewhere along the East Coast or in Europe, would draw throngs of people for their own sake. Either, one has loads of time and can travel at ease, coast along the highways, stop here and there randomly, stop at all the places that are marked in the "shouldn´t miss" section of the travel guide. Or, one has to skip them due to bummer time restrictions. One of those places is Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park located in southern Utah, very close to the Arizona State Border and not far from a small town called Kanab. It´s off Highway 89 which most people use to transit from the Zion National Park/Bryce Canyon bubble to the Grand Canyon/Monument Valley bubble. Still overwhelmed by the last big attraction and in preparation of the next big thing, most people drive past the sign post to get to the next hotel.

The name is misleading when visiting during broad day light as we did. The pink hue comes with the low light of early morning or late afternoon. As we put ourselves under a above mentioned time restriction in order to get to Page, Arizona, we couldn´t wait until sunset. That was unfortunate, but the herd that we are, it couldn´t be helped. At least we got a glimpse and we touched and felt the sand between our fingers and toes. As you can see I managed the urge to apply a pinky filter to the pictures.
