The Promenade Deck - a great way to take a stroll out in fresh air after dinner to support digestion or to get rid of anything which could start a digestion, depending on the weather and personal sturdiness. But on our trip it was all fair weather and calm seas, no emergency shortcuts over the railing. The dinner jacket came in handy as the air becomes chilly after the sun starts sinking toward the edge of the world. It must have been a frightening imagination to think that at the end of the visual field was the border into oblivion, into nothingness or worse, into hell. I can see sailors taking in their rum rations during sunset knowing that the devil could be fooling around with them in the dark. A very good reason to turn into the next door and towards the next bar to have a good drop in memory of all the brave seafaring souls which defied evil ocean demons, only to sail on and keep discovering. Modern technology and the age of enlightenment have turned sea voyage into a rational matter, even a dull matter for most modern seafarers, but somewhere in the mind of a few dreamy laymen, some romance and deep sea mystery survived.
