On my way back from a photo assignment I was distracted by an interesting ramp that led up to a former railway bridge. On the bridge, like on many others that run parallel to it, the tracks were removed and everything was revegetated. Grass, trees and bushes are conquering concrete, steel and bricks. Along some of the former rails runs a system of paths and trails which are perfect for running, biking and roller blading. Gleisdreieck literally means track-triangle. It was a planned triangular setup combining long distance with urban public transport rails more than a hundred years ago. Alongside all the tracks was the Potsdam Freight Terminal, a station that hadn´t been in use for quite some years, hence the idea for a public park was born. Some of the useless tracks and bridges combined with the abandoned station resulted in a park that stretches from Schöneberg almost to Potsdamer Platz. I had already heard of it but never really gave it much thought. Assuming it would be another urban greening project in confined space I postboned a visit to the unforeseeable future. Good thing I stumbled over the ramp leading up to the park, because it´s surely one place I´m going to visit more often. What really surprises me is the lack of information about this public space. Then again, I wasn´t the only one there, obviously it´s on everybodys radar screen but mine. The local propaganda mechanism is one thing I´ve got to get hold of, for there´s still some time ahead to spend in this town and many more things to discover.
Some of the old tracks can still be seen in the park.
This is a jogging path through the woods. Other
parts of the forestation are off limits for walking.
Early fall on October 1st.
Abandoned building in the park.
Urban art in various forms and materials.
A former signal and switch tower is now a cafe and beer garden.
A lot of the railway infrastructure and buildings
haven´t been in use for decades.
In the country side? No, this is less than
half a mile to Potsdamer Platz.
Alongside the park there are heavy residential
construction projects going on.
