Close to Home: Finally Winter

January 03, 2014  •  Leave a Comment

The Washington D.C. area is known for it´s mild winters. It can get nasty once in a while though, the Snowmageddon of 2010 is still in a lot of peoples´s minds. But a regular winter with a few weeks of continuous snow along with low temperatures is quite seldom, one can count the days where you´d grab the sleigh to race down that next hill. So when it snows there is always a bit of anticipation. Will it be cold enough to enjoy it, will schools close down? This phenomenon of school closures by the way, appears very strange to many non-americans. In Germany for example, kids get to school independently, there is no school bus system except in a few remote areas. They walk, ride their bike or use the public transport system. Everybody gets to school in time, snow or no snow. Even the few school buses start rolling when it snows, the buses and the roads are generally prepared for wintery conditions. Of course our kids enjoy the days here when school closes. And when the weather is as grand as it is in these pictures, it´s heaven on earth.
